Where’s the Beef

Clara Peller

On January 10, 1984, fast food restaurant Wendy’s coined the phrase, “Where’s the beef?” by launching a series of television commercials starring 81-year-old Clara Peller. The slogan caught on heavily in the United States and Canada, quickly turning into a pop culture phenomenon. In the original ad, titled “Fluffy Bun”, three elderly ladies examine a large hamburger bun containing a very micro beef patty from fictional burger joint, Fluffy Bun, who’s slogan was opposite of Wendy’s, “Home of the Big Bun”. As two ladies question the hamburger, Clara Peller angrily starts yelling “Where’s the beef?” Later sequels feature Clara Peller yelling “Where’s the beef?” at Fluffy Bun executives over the phone and at fast food drive-thru windows.
