Do you remember...
Tonya Harding vs. Nancy Kerrigan
The drama… Oh yes, the drama! The setting was the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, MI, leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. Top U.S. figure skater, Tonya Harding and her gang of bad dudes put out a hit on fellow top figure skater, Nancy Kerrigan’s kneecap.
The Victim: Nancy Kerrigan
The Bad Guys:Tonya Harding (skater), Jeff Gillooly (ex-husband), Shawn Eckardt (bodyguard), Shane Stant (hitman)
On January 6, 1994 the real showdown between Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan went down during a practice session for the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Michigan. Tonya Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard Shawn Eckardt, hired Shane Stant to whack Kerrigan on the knee, forcing her to withdraw from competition. The USFSA and United States Olympic Committee initiated proceedings to remove her from the 1994 Olympic team after Harding admitted to helping to cover up the attack, but she remained on Team USA after threatening legal action. It wasn’t all rosey for Tonya. At the Olympic Games, she finished in eighth place while a fully recovered Nancy Kerrigan received a silver medal.
