1990

Do you remember...

James “Buster” Douglas

On February 11, 1990 in Tokyo, Japan, the world at large was introduced to James “Buster” Douglas after he seemingly did the impossible. He knocked out the invincible video game hero, “Iron” Mike Tyson and became the heavyweight champion of the world. Buster’s title reign was short lived, however. In his only title defense, later in the year on October 25, 1990, he would get the K.O. from an up-and-coming Evander Holyfield.

Here is the famous Mike Tyson knockout in Tokyo, circa 1990.

In fact, Buster Douglas was so popular after defeating Iron Mike that immediately after the win in 1990, like Tyson, Sega released James ‘Buster’ Douglas Knockout Boxing, in response to the incredibly popular Mike Tyson’s Punch Out for the NES.
