Ridiculously Rad Hairdos of the 80′s

The Permanent (Big Curly Hair)

Sarah Jessica Parker Permed Hair
Why would anyone desire flat, fine, silky hair? In the 1980’s that certainly would have been a faux-pa. The solution…the permanent! The 80’s perm allowed everyone the chance to have big, voluptuous, hot, stylish hair.

Surfer-do (the Wave)

Zach Morris
“Surf’s up man! Did you catch the wave?” The California-inspired surfer-do was all the rage with Hollywood hunks and valley-girls were rockin’ this killer do.

Spiked Hair

Val Kilmer Spiked Hair
Inspired by both Corey Feldman and beach lifeguards, this slick hairdo kept mousse and gel companies in business during the 1980’s. This hot style probably came about by waking up, sliding out of bed and running your fingers through your hair with some L.A. Looks. This style has been modified in various forms since the 80’s. Party on!

Super Bangs

The higher you could get them the cooler you were. Inspired by the Olympic poll-vault or the Niagra Falls, two full ounces of Aquanet were required to get that extra oomph. This hair-do paired well with an extra coat of black (or purple) eyeliner.

Side Pony

This bitchin’ hair-do was seen on every 80’s TV series from Punky Brewster to Kids Incorporated to The Snorks. The side-pony really caught on with 80’s cheerleaders, who seemed to get an extra spark from the firework spewing out the side of their heads.

Mullet

Billy Ray Cyrus Mullet
Another Feldman-esque style that made the ladies scream. In fact, it was so popular with the ladies, that some ladies even adopted the style, an ode to Super Bangs (see Super Bangs above). Don’t forget about Billy Ray Cyrus. He rocked the mega-mull for more than a decade.

Crimped Hair

Seemingly inspired by the crinkle-cut french fry, the most popular teen girls wouldn’t be caught dead at Prom or the local skating rink on a Friday night without being properly crimped. The successor to the permanent, a sleek crimped side-pony was certainly the hottest-do of it’s time.

Hammer Stripes

MC Hammer
Can’t touch this popular hairstyle! Made popular by MC Hammer, but popularized by virgins around the world. Add colors to the stripes for enhanced effects.
